What is composite bonding?

Composite bonding uses the same tooth-coloured resin that is used for white fillings, sculpted and bonded directly onto the surface of your tooth. It is used to repair chips, close small gaps, lengthen worn-down edges, or refine slightly irregular shapes.

Because no drilling is needed in most cases, composite bonding is one of the most conservative cosmetic options available. It is also reversible: if you change your mind later, the composite can be removed without damaging the underlying tooth.

Is it right for me?

  • Small chips or worn-down edges on front teeth
  • Small gaps that you would like closed without orthodontics
  • Slightly uneven edges or shapes you want to smooth out
  • An entry-level cosmetic improvement before committing to veneers

Bonding is not always the right answer. For larger reshaping cases, significant colour changes, or longer-lasting results, porcelain veneers may be more appropriate. We will talk you through both at your consultation.

The Process

What to expect at your appointment

1

Consultation and shade match

We discuss what you want to change and choose a composite shade that matches the rest of your smile.

2

Preparation

The tooth surface is gently cleaned and roughened with a mild acid gel so the composite can bond securely. No significant drilling is needed in most cases.

3

Sculpting

The composite is hand-sculpted directly onto the tooth, layer by layer, to build the shape and finish.

4

Curing and polish

A blue curing light hardens each layer of composite. Once the shape is right we polish the surface to a natural finish.

5

Review and maintenance

Regular hygiene appointments include polishing your bonded teeth, which keeps the surface bright and helps the composite last.

Cost and Smile Club

Composite bonding is £250 per tooth at Anele Dental, including shade-matching and the final polish. Smile Plus members receive 10% off restorative treatments and Smile Elite members 20% off cosmetic treatments including bonding.

Common questions

Composite bonding FAQs

How long does composite bonding last?
Composite bonding typically lasts 5 to 7 years before it needs polishing, touching up, or replacement. Lifespan depends on the location of the bonding, your bite, and habits like nail-biting or grinding.
Does composite bonding stain?
Composite is slightly more porous than natural enamel, so it can pick up colour from coffee, red wine, tea and tobacco over time. Hygiene appointments include polishing the bonding, which refreshes the surface.
Will my tooth need drilling?
Usually not. In most cases the surface of the tooth is gently roughened with an acid gel so the composite can bond to it, but no significant drilling is needed. This is one of the things that makes composite bonding fully reversible.
Is composite bonding the same as veneers?
No. Composite bonding adds material directly to your tooth in a single visit and is generally reversible. Porcelain veneers are custom-made in a lab, usually require some tooth reduction, and last longer (10 to 15 years on average). We will talk you through both options at consultation.
Can I have bonding on multiple teeth?
Yes. Many patients bond their upper front teeth in a single visit to even out shape, close small gaps, and create a more uniform smile. This is sometimes called an edge bonding or full bonding case.
How much does composite bonding cost?
Composite bonding is £250 per tooth at Anele Dental. Smile Elite members receive 20% off cosmetic treatments including bonding, and Smile Plus members receive 10% off restorative work.
