How tooth whitening works

Whitening uses a peroxide-based gel applied to your teeth inside custom-fitted trays. The active ingredient breaks down stain molecules in the enamel, lifting your natural shade by several levels. It does not damage the enamel and does not change the shade of any existing crowns, veneers or fillings.

UK law restricts the strength of whitening gel that can be sold over the counter to a level too low to produce meaningful results. Dentist-supplied whitening uses higher-strength gel under clinical supervision, which is what delivers the change you can see.

Is it right for me?

Whitening suits most adults with healthy teeth and gums who want to lighten yellow or brown discolouration from coffee, tea, red wine, tobacco or simple ageing. It is less effective on grey or tetracycline-stained teeth, and will not change the colour of existing restorations.

  • Great for general yellowing or surface staining
  • Works on natural enamel, not crowns, veneers or composite fillings
  • Not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Requires a healthy mouth - we check this at the start

The Process

What to expect

1

Health check

A short examination to confirm your teeth and gums are ready for whitening. Any active decay or gum disease needs to be treated first.

2

Custom trays

We take a scan or impressions of your teeth and have whitening trays made specifically to fit your mouth. This is what keeps the gel evenly against your teeth.

3

Home whitening

You wear the trays with whitening gel either overnight or for a few hours each day, depending on the product. A full course typically runs 2-4 weeks.

4

Review and maintenance

A review appointment confirms your final shade. Top-up gel is available to refresh the result every 6 to 12 months.

Cost and Smile Club

Complete take-home whitening at Anele Dental is £500, including your custom trays and the whitening gel. Smile Elite members receive an annual whitening kit (excluding trays) as part of their membership benefits.

Common questions

Teeth whitening FAQs

How white will my teeth get?
Results vary based on your starting shade and the type of staining. Most patients see a noticeable lift of several shades after a complete course. We assess your current shade at the start and set realistic expectations.
Is teeth whitening safe?
Dentist-supervised whitening is safe when used as directed. Whitening gel above 0.1% hydrogen peroxide can only legally be supplied through a dental professional in the UK, which is why we begin with a check-up to confirm your teeth and gums are healthy before whitening.
Will it cause sensitivity?
Some patients experience temporary sensitivity to cold during whitening. It usually settles within a few days of finishing. We can adjust the strength or wear time, and recommend sensitivity toothpaste in the run-up if needed.
How long do the results last?
Results typically last between 6 months and 2 years depending on your diet and habits. Coffee, red wine, tea and smoking all reduce longevity. A short top-up course every 6 to 12 months keeps your smile bright.
Can I whiten my crowns, veneers or fillings?
No - whitening only lightens natural tooth enamel. Crowns, veneers and composite fillings will not change shade. If you have visible restorations, talk to us first; sometimes whitening is done before replacing them so the new work matches your brighter smile.
Are over-the-counter whitening kits as good as professional whitening?
No. UK retail whitening kits are restricted to such low peroxide concentrations that meaningful whitening is not realistic. Dentist-supplied whitening uses higher-strength gel in custom-fitted trays that hold the gel against your teeth, which is what delivers the result.
How much does whitening cost at Anele Dental?
Professional take-home whitening is £500, including custom trays and the whitening kit. Smile Elite members receive an annual whitening kit (excluding trays) included with their membership.
